4 Rules When Choosing A Bedding Set

Of all the things that go into making your bedroom a truly special place, the bedding is at the top of the list. It needs to be practical, beautiful, and of high quality. Underestimating the bedding’s contribution to the comfort and coziness of a bedroom pretty much means losing both and ending up with a boring, simple room with a bed in it. Your bedding should represent your inner self and quite literally be the thing you want to fall asleep and wake up next to every day. That’s why choosing the perfect bedding for your needs is no easy task, and that’s why we’re here.

So – what should we keep in mind when looking for new bedding for our bedroom? Well, the long answer is that it largely depends on what kind of bedding you need. Do you need winter bedding? There are a lot of specifics that go into a proper winter bedding and we’ve discussed some of them here. Are you looking for summer bedding instead? We’ve talked about it as well, here.

  • The right material is 90% of the right choice. That’s the main rule here. Satin and silk are often not a bad choice, but there are a lot of reasons why some people don’t like them. High-quality cotton, on the other hand, is something you can never go wrong with. Look for Egyptian cotton most of all, but also pay attention for Pima and Supima cotton, as well as for organic cotton, cotton-poplin, or cotton-polyester. Bamboo is also a good choice in most cases.

  • Take a look at the thread count. We wrote recently (here) about the myths surrounding the thread count. And while it’s true that the thread count is often given much more importance than it deserves, it also still needs our attention. Basically, as long as it’s between 200 and 800 it’s all right. It can be less than 200, however, which is a big No-No, and it can be more than 800. The latter is usually done as a marketing gimmick and if nothing else should be avoided purely on principle. The season also matters here – in the summer you want lower thread count in order to keep cool, while in the winter higher thread count means more warmth.

  • Don’t forget the design. A lot of people, usually men, tend to ignore the bedding’s design when purchasing it and later start noticing things that are not actually to their liking. Even if we’re not talking about an overly specific design, like sports-themed sheets or something like that, the bedding’s color alone is important. Darker colors absorb light and heat, which makes them great during the winter months, while lighter ones reflect light in the summer. Lighter colors are also suggested for most people as more soothing.

  • Maintenance. Some beddings can be machine washed, others need to be dry-cleaned. Take a moment to think which one you prefer. Some need additional sheets and covers, some need to be stored in specific ways when they are not used – take a look at the bedding’s label to see what care is needed exactly.

And there you have it – take a moment to consider your exact needs and don’t forget to follow these basic rules. Your sleep depends on it!
